My name is Tara. I’m 15 years old and I have Obsessive compulsive disorder ( OCD ). When you have OCD, it’s not something that you talk about openly with people. That’s why it was so hard for me to create a portrait of myself that is so personal. It shows a side of me that not many people have seen. Despite the fear I faced with creating this piece, and exposing myself, I created this painting to raise awareness of Obsessive compulsive disorder. It is often not spoken about enough, and many people don’t understand it, so I hope that by viewing this piece you are able to understand it better.
In the painting, I am in my bedroom, and the portrait depicts myself going through one of my daily OCD rituals. I created this portrait on paper, with acrylic paint.
Obsessive compulsive disorder ( OCD ) is a mental health disorder which can affect anyone, at any age. OCD occurs when a person gets caught into a cycle of obsessions and compulsions. The Obsessions are unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images or urges that trigger distressing feelings. The Compulsions are behaviours an individual engages in, to attempt to get rid of the Obsessions and/or decrease his or her distress.
